TRON MAI

Director

Tron Mai is a director at Sony Pictures Animation

Mai joined Sony Pictures Animation in 2018 after spending 10 years at DreamWorks Animation, where he worked on the “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, serving as head of story on “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” There, he also worked on blockbusters like “Kung Fu Panda 2” and “The Croods.” Mai constantly draws inspiration from his own life with the goal of making films he touches more specific and unique – in fact, the character Toothless from the “How to Train Your Dragon” films was inspired by his two real-life dogs, Tucker and Tyler!

Mai began his career in 1999 at Sony Television Animation, and went on to work at studios like Disney, Nickelodeon, and Klasky Cuspo. He was a freshman in high school when he knew he wanted to work in the industry – on a field trip to Disney MGM Studios in Florida, he felt so inspired on the Disney Animation tour, he wanted to continue his passion for creating and making things.

Mai was born in Cà Mau, Vietnam, as the second to youngest of eight kids. In 1979, he and his family escaped Vietnam to Pulau Bidong, a refugee camp in Malaysia, before immigrating to Southern Florida in 1980.

Mai studied illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. He currently resides in Los Feliz, California with his partner.
