YONG DUK JHUN
Head of Layout
Yong Duk Jhun currently serves as head of layout for Sony Pictures Animation’s upcoming original animated musical “Vivo,” which features brand new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creative force behind the Broadway smash “Hamilton,” and is slated for theatrical release in June 2021. Jhun is responsible for the film’s cinematography, as he plans camera angles, camera movements, composition and character choreography in each shot of the film.
Prior to joining Sony Pictures Animation, Jhun most recently worked at Blue Sky Studios, developing shows as a director and serving as layout advisor on “Spies in Disguise” and “Ferdinand.”
Jhun previously served as head of layout at DreamWorks Animation for 14 years, bringing his unique vision to Academy Award®-nominated projects such as “Kung Fu Panda,” in which his cinematography choices were influenced by his Korean background, and “The Croods,” in which he collaborated with cinematographer Roger Deakins, and pulled from the perspective of stylized documentary, which had never been done before at the studio. He also worked on hits such as "Trolls,” “Shrek Forever After,” “Over the Hedge” and the TV series “Father of the Pride.”
Jhun received his BFA from the University of Seoul in Korea, and his master’s degree in Computer Animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He currently resides in La Canada, California with his wife, their two kids, and their goldendoodle. He has been a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences since 2016.
